The cost of the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) is high. This study aims to measure the medical costs in patients with SAHS using a database from the National Health Insurance Bureau of Taiwan. A total of 462,057 patients who underwent polysomnography (PSG) in the period from January 1996 to December 2001 in Taiwan were enrolled. A random sample of the subjects comprised the training group, and the other 62% constituted the testing group. The medical expenditure was measured in the year of the event. Patient characteristics and costs were compared using the chi(2) test. For the 2 years after the diagnosis of SAHS, costs were significantly higher in the SAHS group than in the non-SAHS group. After the diagnosis of SAHS, the majority of patients were given continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment, resulting in a decrease in costs. The mean cost in the SAHS group was estimated at $9032 per patient per year in the 2 years after diagnosis. Patients with SAHS had significantly higher medical costs than those without SAHS. The cost in the 2 years after diagnosis was significantly higher than the cost in the first 2 years after diagnosis. The cost after diagnosis was mainly due to the use of CPAP. a Big Data sharing infrastructure.
